War Story:
We were resupplying elements of the 4th Infantry Division. We later learned they had stumbled into a regimental size base camp. We attempted to land three times but smoke from both the Americans and the enemy obscured our vision. We hovered over a spot where we thought the friendlies were and the crew stowed their weapons and began throwing out the supplies. Suddenly bullets from automatic weapons started coming through the cockpit and cargo compartment. The gunner got off a few rounds while I pulled pitch. The caution panel lit up. We were especially concerned about the transmission and hydraulic caution lights. We considered landing in a near by river, but was not sure if it was in friendly hands so we proceeded to fire support base Mile High on the Cambodian border. At about 150 feet on final approach, the controls froze up and the helicopter began to spin. The tail boom and main rotor separated and the cabin landed just inside the wire. All four crew members were injured with the pilot being injured the least. A 57 AHC Huey came in to pick us up and took us to Kontum where we were checked out in the medical tent. A maintenance crew went in and stripped the aircraft then a Cougar gun ship destroyed it as the FSB was evacuated. An Arclight was called in to destroy the regimental base camp. from: John Quinn, January 1997 This record was last updated on 01/20/97
