War Story (03/03/2020 - Gene Carpenter): Helicopter 66-15041, a C-Model gunship, with the crew of 1Lt Gene C. Carpenter as AC & WO Frederick Brown as CP, was on a mission to provide cover for the re-supply of a SOG fire team in Laos. After the re-supply, the convey of helicopters were returning to Dak To, Vietnam, when helicopter 15041 was hit by ground fire from a 37mm anti-aircraft, based at a Viet Cong base camp in Laos. The helicopter was autorotated into triple canopy and landed upright on the side of a hill without any of the crew being seriously injured. The enemy was surrounding the hill so the rescue had to be done immediately. One of the “Slick” helicopters hovered above the downed helicopter and slowly lowered down through the trees, using the rotor blades to chop away the trees.  The “Slick” lowered down until it was low enough for the crew of the downed helicopter to climb up on the mast of the downed helicopter and grab a rope and climb up several feet to the “Slick”.  The “Slick” AC risked his helicopter and his crew to get the crew of the downed helicopter out, since the enemy had completely surrounded the hill.  During the rescue, the other C-Model gunship and 2 Cobras were circling around the hill shooting, holding the enemy back until the downed crew was rescued.  The only alternative was to leave them there to be captured. After the crew of the downed C-Model gunship was rescued, and because of the location of the enemy, recovery was not an option, so 2 Air Force jets were called in to destroy the helicopter.
