170th AHC UNIT HISTORY
| |
Heroism and professionalism are an everyday occurence in the 170th Assault
Helicopter Company. The Dak Seang campaign is but one example of these traits
shown by the Bikini's in 1970. For this, the 170th has been decorated as one
of the most Valorous Assault Helicopter Companies of the Vietnam war. Despite
heavy combat losses the Bikini's maintained a high state of morale and completed
their missions in a valiant, professional, and efficient manner surpassed by no
helicopter company in Vietnam.
The 170th provides support to the 5th Special Forcs Group (ABN), Command
Control Central, the 22nd ARVN Division, and other associated units throughout
Military Region II.
In the months of January thru November 1970, the Bikini's flew 17,000 hours,
made 40,000 sorties carrying 50,000 troops and 200,000 tons of cargo.
The 170th is now engaged in the mission of training VNAF pilots. This task
is important to the future of aviation and to the mission of the United States
Armed Forces in Vietnam. After receiving many hours of instruction from American
Aviators, each VNAF will take his place in the Vietnamese Air Force and in
time will take over the burden previously borne by the 170th Avaition Company.
